Research Shows Strong Renewable Energy Laws Reduce Climate Change Pollution

2013-05-01 23:20:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

EcoWatch: The Extended Policies case, released yesterday as part of the U.S Energy Information Administration (EIA)s Annual Energy Outlook 2013 (AEO2013), shows that extending certain federal energy efficiency and renewable energy laws and regulations could reduce annual energy-related carbon dioxide emissions in the U.S. in 2040 by roughly 6 percent relative to a reference case projection that generally assumes current laws and policies. Between 2013 and 2040, this reduction adds up to a cumulative emission...

Natural Aerosols May Help Slow Climate Change By Small Amounts, New Study Shows

2013-05-01 21:45:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Huffington Post: It's possible, suggests a new study, which finds that as climates warm around the world, plants may respond by releasing more aerosol particles into the atmosphere. The research, published online April 28 in the journal Nature Geoscience, finds that these natural aerosols can fuel cloud formation, which may help cool a warming climate. [The Reality of Climate Change: 10 Myths Busted] Aerosols are fine particles of solid or liquid matter, suspended in air. Most of the aerosol particles in Earth's...

Better wheat varieties in the future? Wheat genome shows resistance genes easy to access

2013-05-01 19:31:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

ScienceDaily: It's hard to go anywhere without a map -- especially into the deep and complex world of genetics. Now, Kansas State University researcher Bikram Gill and an international team of researchers have developed a physical map of wheat's wild ancestor, Aegilops tauschii, commonly called goatgrass, as they take the first huge step toward sequencing the wheat genome -- a complete look at wheat's genetic matter. A physical map of a genome shows the physical locations of genes and other DNA sequences of...

DARPA shows off cheap, adaptable, resilient robot hand that can take a beating

2013-05-01 19:16:03| Extremetech

After more than three years of development, it seems DARPA's ARM program is finally coming to fruition. The ARM (Autonomous Robotic Manipulation) program was created in 2010 with the purpose of creating robust, low-cost, multi-fingered, and dexterous robotic arms to replace current robot arms, which generally take the form of clunky claws that crush everything in their path. After watching the video below, I think it's safe to say that DARPA's ARM program is a resounding success.
