Discovered Microbes Could Help Dispose of Nuclear Waste
2014-09-10 22:04:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Nature World: Researchers have recently stumbled upon tiny single-celled organisms living underground that could aid in the disposal of radioactive waste, potentially making "green" power plants that are more viable and less harmful to the environment. While nuclear power plants themselves have always been valued for their extreme efficiency and relatively "green" nature - with little need for fossil fuels or the release of greenhouse gases - the disposal of their dangerous waste has always been a daunting...

New Microbes, Toxins Discovered In NIH, FDA Lab...
2014-09-07 16:14:11| Biotech - Topix.net
Containers filled with several types of potentially deadly substances, including a nearly 100-year-old vial of the toxin ricin and samples of the pathogens that cause botulism and the plague , have reportedly been discovered at US National Institutes of Health and Food and Drug Administration laboratories. The substances were discovered as part of a search launched in response to the accidental discovery of smallpox at an NIH facility in Bethesda, Maryland earlier this summer, according to BBC News .

Six more deadly pathogens discovered improperly stored in NIH and FDA labs
2014-09-06 10:52:18| Biotech - Topix.net
Workers searching government laboratories in the wake of the July discovery of smallpox have found six more improperly stored, dangerous pathogens - including ricin, the neurotoxin botulism and the bacteria that causes plague. On Friday, officials at the National Institutes of Health said the search on its sprawling Bethesda campus had turned up five different misplaced pathogens in recent weeks.

Hundreds methane vents causing 'widespread leakage' discovered along US-Atlantic margin
2014-08-25 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Business Times: Scientists have discovered nearly 600 methane vents off the eastern seaboard of the United States, along the continental margin, which is the region of the ocean floor lying between the coast and the deeper Atlantic Ocean, according to a paper published Sunday in the journal Nature Geoscience. It is the first time we have seen this level of seepage outside the Arctic that is not associated with features like oil or gas reservoirs or active tectonic margins, Adam Skarke, a geologist at Mississippi...

Methane Is Discovered Seeping From Seafloor Off East Coast, Scientists Say
2014-08-24 20:32:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
New York Times: Scientists have discovered methane gas bubbling from the seafloor in an unexpected place: off the East Coast of the United States where the continental shelf meets the deeper Atlantic Ocean. The methane is emanating from at least 570 locations, called seeps, from near Cape Hatteras, N.C., to the Georges Bank southeast of Nantucket, Mass. While the seepage is widespread, the researchers estimated that the amount of gas was tiny compared with the amount released from all sources each year. In a paper...
