Rome, December 10 - Global companies STMicroelectronics and Clonit, and Italy's National Institute for Infectious Diseases Lazzaro Spallanzani have developed an rapid, portable Ebola virus tester, a media statement released on Wednesday announced. According to the statement, the portable analyzer kit detects the presence of the Ebola virus "with extreme accuracy in just a few microliters of human-blood samples" within 75 minutes.

Driven by the ambitious objective to quickly detect the Ebola virus in the blood at a very early stage to minimize further transmission, STMicroelectronics and Clonit, in collaboration with Italy's National Institute for Infectious Diseases Lazzaro Spallanzani, have developed, in a few weeks' time, a prototype portable analyzer able to identify the presence of the Ebola virus in less than 75 minutes. The portable analyzer is based on the Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction molecular biology technique.

Bayer HealthCare and the Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative have signed an agreement under which Bayer will provide the active ingredient emodepside to support DNDi in its effort to develop a new oral drug to treat river blindness . The world's second leading infectious cause of blindness, river blindness is a neglected tropical disease caused by a filarial worm.
