Microsoft releases SQL Server 2014 to manufacturing

The new version of Microsoft's relational database management system is focused on providing robust support for hybrid deployment scenarios and rounding out the core workloads Microsoft's in-memory technology supports with in-memory OLTP (online transaction processing). Microsoft already supports business intelligence as part of Analysis Services, Excel, and Power BI for Office 365; complex event processing with StreamInsight; and in-memory columnstore in SQL Server and its Parallel Data Warehouse product.

'Nobel Prize in Computing' goes to Microsoft Research principal

Leslie Lamport, a Microsoft Research principal, has been named the winner of the 2013 ACM A.M. Turing Award, also known as the "Nobel Prize in Computing." The computer scientist was recognized by the Association for Computing Machinery for "imposing clear, well-defined coherence on the seemingly chaotic behavior of distributed computing systems, in which several autonomous computers communicate with each other by passing messages."
