The NZ Food and Grocery Council and the Taxpayers' Union have welcomed the government's announcement of 22 initiatives aimed at tackling obesity in young people, which focusses on education, health checks and physical activity, rather than taxing unhealthy foods. The food industry had argued against any sort of levy of foods high in sugar, fat or salt.

Investors cheer solid SSE half-year

Scotland's second largest quoted company SSE saw A 500million added to its market value after a trading update which assured investors that the business is on track to meet its full-year targets. The energy giant reported a strong first half-year thanks to a recovery in its renewable energy output and an improvement in the electricity supply business which has been losing ground to small competitors.
