Hunger, malnutrition in Canada's Arctic nears crisis

2014-03-28 15:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Agence France-Presse: A new report highlighted Thursday growing hunger and malnutrition in Canada's Arctic as development snowballs and tastes change, and called for immediate actions to stop an "emerging public health crisis." The report found that most northern households are twice as likely -- 27 percent versus a national average of 12 percent -- to face hunger or fear of starvation. Northern households with children reported even higher rates of food insecurity. Nearly 115,000 people, mostly indigenous, live...

Temperature Linked Food-Webs in Arctic Ecosystems

Nature World News: A comprehensive analysis of Arctic wildlife and the food-web system in place reveals that temperature has a surprising and important effect on the food chain, according to new research. Writing in the journal Nature Climate Change, an international team of biologists reports their field study of Arctic wildlife and food-webs in Canada, Greenland, Russia and Norway. "Temperature has an unexpectedly important effect on food-web structure," Denmark's Aarhus University reported. "While the relationship...

Canada 'Arctic passage' still a ways off: transportation minister

Reuters: Logistical challenges to large-scale sea shipments within the Arctic Circle mean such trade will not be a near-term rival to existing routes, a senior Canadian official said on Tuesday. Insurance companies are beginning to weigh the hazards of sea traffic across waterways in northern Canada and investors are mulling the potential using Arctic trade routes, said Canadian Transportation Minister Lisa Raitt. "It is not imminent but it is possible," she said in Washington. Shippers could trim...

Thawing Arctic releases more carbon than it absorbs

2014-03-25 12:11:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Blue and Green: The benefits of an Arctic region that stays greener for longer because of warming temperatures are not sufficient to offset the carbon released by the thawing permafrost, scientists have found. As the Arctic climate warms at twice the rate of the rest of the globe, the regions growing season is lasting longer each year. This means that plant growth is increasing, meaning that more of the greenhouse gas carbon is absorbed out of the atmosphere. However, new research from the Woods Hole Research...

U.S. Navy shuts Arctic submarine ice camp after cracks appear

2014-03-24 22:50:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Reuters: The U.S. Navy said on Monday it was dismantling a temporary ice camp used to support submarine exercises off the coast of Alaska a week early after cracks appeared in the ice and made it too risky to use airfields to ferry people and supplies. "The rapidly changing conditions of the ice, along with extremely low temperatures and poor visibility have hampered helicopter operations and made sustaining the runway and camp too risky," the Navy division in charge of submarine forces said in a statement....
