National Geographic: Pulling back the curtains to my window this morning, overlooking the small arctic town of Kautokeino in northern Norway, the landscape looks charmingly picturesque. Colorful wooden houses are tucked under a thick layer of snow, a white tundra plateau extends off into the horizon. Daylight, now making an appearance in this part of the world for more than 15 hours of the day, already broke several hours ago. The sky sheds the last strands of dawn`s orange and purple hues. But this year was a bad...

Arctic sea ice falls fifth lowest level on record
2014-04-03 00:31:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Guardian: Arctic sea ice remained on its death spiral on Wednesday, with the amount of winter ice cover falling to its fifth lowest on the satellite record, scientists at the National Snow and Ice Data Center said. The scientists said Arctic sea ice extent for March averaged 4.80m sq km (5.70m sq miles). That's 730,000 sq km below the 1981-2010 satellite average. The latest findings reinforce a trend that could see the Arctic losing all of its ice cover in the summer months within decades. The world's...
Why Arctic ice is disappearing more rapidly than expected: River ice reveals new twist on Arctic melt
2014-04-02 20:54:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
ScienceDaily: A new study led by Lance Lesack, a Simon Fraser University geographer and Faculty of Environment professor, has discovered unexpected climate-driven changes in the mighty Mackenzie River's ice breakup. This discovery may help resolve the complex puzzle underlying why Arctic ice is disappearing more rapidly than expected. Lesack is the lead author of "Local spring warming drives earlier river-ice breakup in a large Arctic delta." Published recently in Geophysical Research Letters, the study has...

Yomiuri Shimbun: The international climate change panel currently meeting in Yokohama, Japan, has agreed to state in its upcoming report that global warming has inflicted irreversible damage coral reefs and Arctic sea ice. The agreement came at a plenary session of Working Group II of the UN International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The IPCC is meeting in Yokohama to assess the impact of ongoing warming of the planet. According to the IPCC, there will be serious effects on the natural environment when global...
