Mars rover Curiosity finally arrives at its primary science target: Mount Sharp
2014-09-12 16:16:03| Extremetech
After two years on the surface of Mars, Curiosity has finally reached its primary science destination: the foot of Mount Sharp, or to give its official name Aeolis Mons. It will now slowly climb Mount Sharp, drilling into rocks and analyzing a series of interesting boundaries between different strata -- layers of geologically interesting rock that have found their way to the surface and can tell us a lot about the history of the Red Planet.

NASA has announced that the next Mars rover -- currently codenamed Mars 2020 -- will be outfitted with an array of sophisticated, upgraded scientific instruments that will let it delve deeper and farther than Curiosity, with the hope that it will be able to uncover signs of life on Mars. Perhaps even more excitingly, Mars 2020 will also be equipped with a new instrument that can convert the carbon dioxide in Mars' atmosphere into oxygen -- this is of utmost importance if humanity ever colonizes Mars -- and another instrument that will gather and store Martian rock samples for eventual return to Earth.
Mars rover Opportunity breaks longest off-Earth driving record, finally beating the speed freak Russians

NASA's Opportunity rover, Curiosity's diminutive forebear that has been trundling across Mars for over 10 years, has finally broken the world record for the longest distance driven on another planet. Since landing on the Red Planet in January 2004, Opportunity has now driven a grand total of 25 miles (40 kilometers), breaking the previous off-Earth distance record of 24.2 miles, which was held by the Russian lunar rover Lunokhod 2.
