Swine Delta Coronavirus Confirmed on 6 Ontario Farms

Source: American Association of Swine Veterinarians As of March 14, 2014, the Animal Health Laboratory (AHL) had diagnosed Swine Delta Coronavirus (SDCV) in samples from six Ontario pig farms as of mid-March, according to the American Association of Swine Veterinarians (AASV). The pathogen was detected as a result of follow up testing on farms with clinical signs of vomiting and diarrhea, but that tested negative for Transmissible Gastroenteritis (TGE) virus and Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus (PEDV). Samples of porcine plasma have also tested positive for SDCV at AHL and Iowa State University. The samples submitted were from the same batch that tested positive for PEDV in February 2014. read more

USDA Announces $20 Million Effort that will Help Reduce Damage Caused by Feral Swine

Source: The United States Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service Undersecretary for the United State Department of Agriculture's Marketing and Regulatory Programs Edward Avalos announced recently that USDA is kicking off a national effort to reduce the devastating damage caused by feral, or free ranging, swine. The $20 million program aims to help states deal with a rapidly expanding population of invasive wild swine that causes $1.5 billion in damage annually and help control costs as well. read more
