United States Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai this week gave the green light to a merger between T-Mobile and Sprint, currently the third- and fourth-largest mobile carriers respectively. The nation's top telecom regulator agreed to the $26 billion merger, but with some conditions -- the most notable being that Sprint would sell off its Boost Mobile prepaid cellphone brand.

DoJ staff recommend T-Mobile/Sprint merger be blocked - report

(Telecompaper) The US Justice Department's antitrust division staff has recommended the agency oppose T-Mobile US's acquisition of smaller rival Sprint, two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters. The final decision on whether to allow the merger lies with political appointees at the department, headed by antitrust division chief Makan Delrahim. The Justice Department is expected to make a final decision in about a month, the two sources said.

Senators call for FCC, DoJ to block T-Mobile takeover of Sprint

(Telecompaper) Nine Democrats in the US Senate have called for the Department of Justice and Federal Communications Commission to block T-Mobile US's planned takeover of Sprint, Cnet reports. The Senators wrote to the two bodies that will decide on regulatory clearance for the merger ahead of hearings in Congress on the deal.

US DoJ charges Huawei with violating sanctions and stealing trade secrets

(Telecompaper) The US Department of Justice has charged Huawei CFO Wanzhou Meng and Huawei with financial fraud, with Huawei Device USA and Huawei Iranian subsidiary Skycom named specifically. Aside from fraud, the CFO and companies have been charged with money laundering, conspiracy to defraud the US, obstruction of justice and sanctions violations.
