Twisted laser vortex breakthrough could lead to near-infinite bandwidth, new science

2013-09-24 17:16:33| Extremetech

Scientists at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) have devised a new way of creating twisted laser beams -- optical vortexes -- for carrying vast, near-infinite amounts of data down optical fiber, discovering exoplanets, and more. SLAC's optical vortex technology is much more advanced than previous attempts at creating and transmitting twisted light, allowing for shorter pulses, higher intensities, and much wider wavelengths -- including X-rays.

Magical climate contrarian thinking debunked by real science

2013-09-23 06:44:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Guardian: One of the most important concepts to understand when trying to grasp how the Earth's climate works, is that every climate change must have a physical cause. This principle was the basis of our new paper, Nuccitelli et al. (2013). Over the past century, climate scientists have developed a solid understanding about how the climate works and the physical mechanisms that cause it to change. By building that knowledge into complex climate models, scientists have been able to accurately reproduce past...
