Baidu revenues soar over 50% in Q4

(Telecompaper) Chinese search engine Baidu said fourth quarter revenues soared over 50 percent from the year before to CNY 9.52 billion, with online market revenues up 50.5 percent to CNY 9.46 billion. The number of active online marketing customers rose by 11.1 percent to 451,000, with revenue per online marketing customer lifting 34.8 percent to CNY 20,900. Traffic acquisition cost represented 12.3 percent of total revenues, compared to 9.6 percent the year earlier. The company said the increase mainly reflects increased contextual ads contributions and hao123 promotions through the company's network. Adjusted EBITDA rose 7.2 percent from the year earlier to CNY 3.56 billion. Group operating profit meanwhile slipped 3.8 percent to CNY 2.74 billion while the net profit went 0.4 percent lower to CNY 2.78 billion or CNY 0.92 per share. At end December, the company had cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments of CNY 38.427 billion. Baidu currently expects to generate total revenues at CNY 9.240-9.520 billion for the first quarter, up 54.8-59.5 percent from the year before.
Telefonica Germany loses 175,000 mobile customers in Q4

(Telecompaper) Telefonica Germany had a total of 25.2 million customer accesses at end-2013. The mobile base reached 19.401 million, including 10.3 million post-paid and 9.1 million pre-paid mobile customers. This represents a net loss of 175,000 customers compared to September 2013 but 101,000 more customers than at the end of 2012. ARPU was EUR 12.50 in Q4 2013, down 8 percent from EUR 13.60 in Q4 2012. The operator recorded a 6.3 percent fall in wireless service revenues to EUR 743 million in Q4, while wireline sales were down 9.2 percent to EUR 297 million. Group OIBDA was still up 8.8 percent to EUR 373 million, giving a margin of 30.0 percent. Despite a 27 percent increase in capex to EUR 198 million, free cash flow was up 27 percent to EUR 156 million. Telefonica said it still expects to close the acquisition of E-Plus by mid-year, pending clearance from the European Commission for the transaction.

Yota to launch new dual-screen YotaPhone in Q4

(Telecompaper) Yota Devices announced a new version of its dual-screen YotaPhone at Mobile World Congress. The next generation YotaPhone has full-touch control on its electronic paper display and other new hardware and software features. With the first generation YotaPhone, launched last year, notifications and other important information appear automatically on the front display of the phone. The new YotaPhone allows users to touch the screen to open and respond to these notifications, without having to wake up the main colour display of the phone. Users can respond to mails and SMS, accept and decline meeting invites and post to social media. The new YotaPhone comes with an improved front screen, a 4.7 inch electronic paper display higher resolution, greater pixel density and a built-in light for viewing in the dark or bright sunlight. The main screen, a 5.0-inch Amoled, was also improved and now comes with a Smart Power Mode to turn it off and rely on the front screen to preserve battery life. Other features of the new YotaPhone include a Qualcomm quad-core 800 processor, wireless charging, NFC, anti-theft protection and hands-free audio. Yota Devices also announced that it is opening the YotaPhone SDK to third-party developers. The new YotaPhone will go on sale in the EMEA region and Russia in Q4, and a version for the US and Asian markets will follow 3-4 months later.
