Tele2 starts NFV roll-out with OpenStack
2016-03-23 08:43:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Tele2 has announced its first plans for network virtualisation. The company plans to move its network and IT functions into the cloud, using network function virtualisation (NFV). To speed service deployment and keep costs low, Tele2 has chosen OpenStack as the foundation for its private cloud. Canonical will provide and manage OpenStack for Tele2 and Canonical's generic VNF manager, Juju, will be used for the onboarding of new services. Huawei will be providing the rack mount servers. Cisco is the chosen network vendor and will provide its ACI solution. The entire data centre network will be built on a future-proof spine/leaf network with 25G/100G connectivity. Tele2 expects to have the first live application in the form of a virtual Evolved Packet Core (vEPC) in the cloud by Q3.

Verizon starts VoLTE roll-out
2014-08-26 16:51:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Verizon Wireless announced the roll-out of voice services over its LTE network. Billed initially as Advanced Calling 1.0, the services will start reaching customers in the coming weeks, the US operator said. This will include HD Voice calls and video calling over the 4G network. Both customers need to have compatible devices and be on the Verizon network for the VoLTE service to work. Verizon said customers will see clearly in their contact list the option for video calls and will be able to switch between voice and video within a call. The service will become available gradually as more mobile devices are updated with new software to support VoLTE.

Ziggo starts nationwide roll-out of Wi-Fi network
2013-04-25 16:00:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Dutch cable operator Ziggo has begun its national deployment of Wi-Fi hotspots by rolling out 65,000 in The Hague. The operator said internet customers in the areas where it operates will have access to almost 1 million Ziggo Wi-fiSpots by the end of August, based on shared access to customers' home broadband modems. Following the test city of Groningen, the Hague will be the second location to go live, with all the hotspots active by 7 May. According to the plans, the operator will roll out 200,000 hotspots in South-Holland and Groningen, and 200,000 in Utrecht and North Holland by end June, as well as 150,000 Brabant and 200,000 in Limburg and Twente by end July. By end August, 100,000 will be installed in Friesland, Drenthe and Overijssel. Ziggo said the numbers were based on the Ziggo Wi-Fi modems installed as of 31 March. The number of modems, and therefore the number of hotspots, are expected to pass 1 million by September. Ziggo said it has adapted its equipment and programmes so that there will be a total separation between the WifiSpot and the client network; Wi-Fi use by clients does not affect their internet performance; and that the WifiSpot has enough range to support 20 guest users simultaneously with the necessary freedom of movement. Ziggo tested the system in Groningen, saying that almost all clients found it to be an excellent alternative to 3G. Less than 1 percent of the clients turned off the hotspot function and did not wish to participate, Ziggo said.
