Claro, Movistar, Entel win 700 MHz spectrum in Chile

(Telecompaper) Chilean telecoms regulator Subtel has announced that Movistar, Entel and Claro each won a spectrum block in the 700 MHz band. Movistar won Block A offering CLP 4.24 billion, Entel offered CLP 6.8 billion for Block B, and Claro got Block C for CLP 404 million. The three operators have 24 months to deploy their networks nationwide, to expand the coverage of 4G mobile services and broadband connections across the country. Claro, Entel and Movistar have 18 months to provide connectivity to 1,281 remote and isolated communities, 503 schools, and 12 national roads and highways (854 km).

Movistar eliminates tariff limits, launches unlocked phones

(Telecompaper) Movistar Spain has launched a campaign dubbed 'Mas por lo mismo' ('More for the same price'), which seeks to eliminate minute and data limits from tariff plans, and tie-in periods for postpaid subscribers. The campaign marks one year since the introduction of Telefonica's Movistar Fusion quad-play service.

Yoigo, Movistar strike network sharing agreement

(Telecompaper) TeliaSonera's Spanish subsidiary Yoigo has confirmed it has reached a series of agreements with Movistar. These agreements enable Yoigo to sell combined fixed-mobile services to its customers, while Movistar will be able to offer its customers mobile services on Yoigo's 4G network.

Movistar launches first Firefox phone for EUR 69

(Telecompaper) Telefonica announced it will launch the first smartphone running the Firefox OS from Mozilla on 02 July. Movistar will offer the ZTE Open phone in Spain for EUR 69, including EUR 30 credit for prepaid customers and 4 GB microSD card. Telefonica said it plans to offer more Firefox devices later this year and will expand distribution of the ZTE Open in the coming weeks to other countries, such as Colombia and Venezuela. The ZTE phone features a 3.5-inch, HVGA TFT touchscreen display, 256MB RAM, 512MB internal storage and a 3.2MP camera. Aimed at first-time smartphone users, the phone supports messaging, e-mail, calendar, FM radio, camera with built-in style filters, location-based services from Nokia HERE maps and browsing via the Firefox Web browser. The Firefox OS comes with a new search capability that allows the device to adapt to the user's search enquiries. Swipe to the right from the home screen and enter a search term and the phone will customize itself to that search. For example, search for an artist and get results to buy songs, watch music videos, buy concert tickets and listen to them instantly without having to download and install any apps.

Movistar, Vodafone, Orange launch Joyn-embedded handsets

(Telecompaper) Movistar, Vodafone and Orange have introduced the first mobile phones with the Joyn Rich Communication Service (RCS) incorporated into the OS in Spain. The offer will initially include mobile phones from manufacturers such as Samsung, LG, HTC, Sony and Nokia. With this launch, Spain becomes the first country in the world to offer a fully interoperable rich communications service, supported by Movistar, Orange and Vodafone, to its mobile subscribers.
