Within the Optical Imaging Competence Area OI CA of the Remote Sensing and Products Division RSP, the Remote Sensing Scientist Lightning Imagery provides scientific and technical expertise on the Meteosat Third Generation MTG Lightning Imager LI observations and their applications and supports the calibration and validation of EUMETSAT LI products. DUTIES Support the development and operations of Level1 and Level2 data processing chains for the LI instrument onboard EUMETSAT MTG satellites, including all aspects relating to product generation and quality monitoring calibration, verification and validation Develop and maintain prototype software in order to improve the operational implementations of LI Level1 and Level2 data processing chains Initiate and lead relevant scientific studies, including the management of external contracts Support the definition of requirements for the realisation of future satellite products and services Actively interact and cooperate with the operational user community of EUMETSAT satellite products and services and with international partners. QUALIFICATIONS University degree in remote sensing, physics, engineering or equivalent. Candidates must be able to work effectively in English and have some knowledge of French. DEADLINE SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE In depth scientific knowledge of remote sensing physics Demonstrated experience in developing and coding scientific application software in scientific programming languages Python, Matlab, IDL etc. Experience in management of scientific application software would be an advantage Expertise on spacebased optical instruments and experience in the processing of their data would be an advantage A background in lightning physics and lightning signals analysis would be an advantage. Excellent analysis, synthesis and presentation skills Strong interpersonal skills and coordination capabilities and a proven ability to apply these to the interactions within a team and between teams. EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS The initial contract will be of 4 years duration, with subsequent 5year contracts being awarded thereafter, subject to individual performance and organisation requirements. There is no limit to the amount of followup contracts a staff member can receive up to the EUMETSAT retirement age of 63 and there are certainly opportunities to establish a long career perspective at EUMETSAT. This post is graded A2A4 on the EUMETSAT salary scales. The minimum basic salary for this post is EURO 5,612 per month net of internal tax which may be negotiable based on skills and experience. The salary scale provides for increments on the anniversary of taking up employment, and scales are reviewed by the EUMETSAT Council with effect from 1 January each year. Within the Passive Microwave and Radio Occultation Competence Area PMROCA, the Passive Microwave Remote Sensing Scientist will support the scientific development, validation and quality monitoring of products extracted from observations from passive microwave imagers and sounders of EUMETSAT and partners satellites, with initial focus on the Microwave Imager MWI of the EUMETSAT Polar System Second Generation currently under development. DUTIES Acquire knowledge specific to EUMETSATs passive microwave imaging and sounding instruments through participation in relevant instrument functional chain teams, and maintain scientific ownership of the key design features of the MWI instrument and of the MWI mission and applications Generate and refine processing algorithms and product specifications for the processing chains, including definition of file formats and auxiliary data streams Prototype product generation functions, generate and analyse performance budgets, and prepare representative test datasets for verification and validation purposes Develop instrumentspecific calibration and validation plans Instigate and support the definition of external studies and the assessment of their results Contribute to ground segment andor instrument chain reviews, progress and technical meetings Ensure the continued evolution of a stateofthe art scientific basis for the extraction of products from EUMETSAT passive microwave instruments Support interactions with the worldwide user community on the operational exploitation of passive microwave measurements from EUMETSATs and partners missions. Within the Clouds and Aerosol Competence Area ClACA of the Remote Sensing and Products Division RSP, the Remote Sensing Scientist 3MI Polarimetry will work on the extraction of radiance, polarisation, aerosol and cloud products from observations of the Multiviewing, Multichannel, Multipolarisation Imager 3MI instrument to be flown on future EUMETSAT MetopSG satellites. DUTIES Provide scientific and technical expertise on the processing and analysis of 3MI instrument data, including the coregistration of 3MI images, in support of environment monitoring and forecasting applications and climate applications Support the development, prototyping and validation of agreed Day 1 3MI radiance, polarisation, aerosol and cloud products, focussing initially on radiance, polarisation and cloud products and continuing with aerosol products Contribute to calibration, validation, and monitoring of 3MI radiance, polarisation, aerosol and cloud products, in collaboration with mission partners and the scientific and user communities Contribute to the detailed formulation of requirements for new or enhanced 3MI products in response to the needs of user communities Support the development, prototyping and validation of new or enhanced 3MI products Based on interactions with the scientific and user communities, contribute to the advancement of the understanding of innovative measurements of cloud and aerosol properties and related products and to the preparation and development of their applications Support interactions with mission and international partners. SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE Demonstrated knowledge of physics of optical remote sensing of cloud and aerosol properties including experience in the use of radiative transfer models Knowledge of the most relevant imagery missions, including multiviewing, multipolarisation, multispectral imaging missions, their products, applications and user communities Detailed knowledge of the functioning, operation, and data processing of multiviewing, multipolarisation, multispectral imaging instruments Experience of multiviewing, multipolarisation, multispectral imaging instrument calibration and characterisation, and development of radiance, polarisation, aerosol and cloud products, including longterm monitoring and validation would be an advantage Experience of satellite data processing systems and very good skills in a higher programming language e.g. C, Fortran Strong communication and presentation skills including demonstrated experience in writing scientific and technical documents Excellent interpersonal and teamworking skills.
