Scientists seek source of giant methane mass over Southwest
2015-04-09 12:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Associated Press: Scientists are working to pinpoint the source of a giant mass of methane hanging over the southwestern U.S., which a study found to be the country's largest concentration of the greenhouse gas. The report that revealed the methane hot spot over the Four Corners region where Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Arizona meet was released last year. Now, scientists from the University of Colorado, the University of Michigan, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and NASA are conducting...
Scientists confirm that the Arctic could become a major source of carbon emissions
2015-04-09 01:56:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Washington Post: As the frozen Arctic soil known as "permafrost" thaws, it could release large amounts of carbon in the form of both carbon dioxide and methane to the atmosphere. And this new source of greenhouse gas emissions could be large enough that it could substantially undermine attempts to cut down on emissions from fossil fuels. Now, an overview of what we know about the permafrost carbon problem has just come out in Nature, written by a group of 17 experts on the matter. In other words, this...
EPA Student Fellowships support future environmental scientists.
2015-04-08 14:31:10| Industrial Newsroom - All News for Today
Helping inspire next generation of environmental scientists and engineers, EPA announced 34 fellowships for undergraduate students in 25 states and Puerto Rico to pursue environmental science and related fields of study. Awards are part of EPA's Greater Research Opportunities (GRO) fellowship program and provide students with opportunity to gain hands-on experience with agency scientists. Students selected for fellowships are undergraduates entering their junior year.

Can Climate Scientists Make Difference by Not Flying?
2015-04-07 17:01:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Climate Central: Globally, air travel accounts for 2.5 percent of greenhouse gas emissions. If air travel were a country, it would be roughly on par with Germany in emissions. And if air travel by climate scientists were a city, it would be a one-stoplight outpost. In other words, climate scientists curtailing their air travel would make a microscopic dent in reducing emissions, but a new paper argues they should do it anyway, because their influence goes far beyond numbers. "It's a credibility issue,' Corinne...

Scientists Are Arguing About When, Exactly, Humans Started to Rule the Planet
2015-04-06 21:44:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
ClimateDesk: Signs of human impact on the planet are everywhere. Sea levels are rising as ice at both poles melts; plastic waste clogs the ocean; urban sprawl paves over landscapes while industrial agricultural empties aquifers. Between climate change, urban development, and straight-up, old-school pollution, the Earth we inhabit now would be scarcely recognizable to our earliest ancestors 150,000 year ago. In fact, these changes are so pronounced, and their connection to human activity so obvious, that many...
