British Scientists Develop FMD Vaccine
2013-04-01 18:53:00| National Hog Farmer
Source: Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council British scientists have developed a new methodology to produce a synthetic vaccine for foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) that triggers optimum immune response but doesn’t rely on live virus for growth and is therefore much safer to produce. The tiny protein shells in the synthetic process are engineered to be more stable to make the vaccine much easier to store and reduce the need for a cold chain. read more

Scientists a step closer toward creating biofuels directly from atmospheric CO2
2013-03-29 21:22:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Mongabay: Researchers have taken a step closer to using atmospheric carbon dioxide as a biofuel, potentially helping mitigate climate change while at the same time meeting rising energy demand, according to a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Scientists at the University of Georgia and the North Carolina State University are working with the bacteria Pyrococcus furiosus to convert CO2 into directly biofuels. Scientists Say Oil Industry Likely Caused Largest Oklahoma Earthquake
2013-03-29 20:04:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
National Geographic: The largest recorded earthquake in Oklahoma history was likely triggered by the injection of wastewater from oil production into wells deep beneath the earth, according to a study published Tuesday in the scientific journal Geology. The magnitude 5.7 earthquake, which struck in 2011 near Prague in central Oklahoma, is the largest and most recent of a number of quakes scientists have tied to wastewater injection from oil and natural gas production, raising new concerns about the practice. Scientists engineer E.coli caffeine 'addiction' in beverages, say bacteria could clean wastewater
2013-03-29 17:45:46| Beverages - Topix.net
Scientists in the US have genetically modified an E.coli strain so that it is 'addicted' to caffeine, where it feeds on the stimulant and serves as a biosensor to measure levels thereof in common beverages such as Coke.
