Storm Desmond flooding partly due to climate change, scientists conclude
2015-12-11 01:01:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Guardian: Manmade climate change was partly responsible for Storm Desmonds torrential rain which devastated parts of Scotland, the Lake District and Northern Ireland, scientists have concluded. The researchers at Oxford University and the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) calculated that climate change had made the flooding event 40% more likely, with the estimate of the increased likelihood ranging between 5% and 80%. The increase we found is small but robust, said Dr Friederike Otto...

Scientists develop diesel that emits far less CO2
2015-12-10 18:02:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
ScienceDaily: Researchers from KU Leuven and Utrecht University have discovered a new approach to the production of fuels. Their new method can be used to produce much cleaner diesel. It can quickly be scaled up for industrial use. In 5 to 10 years, we may see the first cars driven by this new clean diesel. The production of fuel involves the use of catalysts. These substances trigger the chemical reactions that convert raw material into fuel. In the case of diesel, small catalyst granules are added to the...

Climate scientists battle South African industry
2015-12-10 17:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
SciDevNet: South Africa is the second biggest economy in Africa. It is also heavily reliant on coal, and its struggles to address climate change without hampering development resonate with the whole continent. But this conflict may be a false one, aired by big fossil fuel firms with an interest in protecting their profits, says South African energy expert Hilton Trollip from the University of Cape Town. In the run up to the UN climate summit now reaching its climax, the worlds countries submitted proposals...

Monsanto-Linked Scientists Say Roundup Is Safe: Critics
2015-12-08 20:02:27| Chemicals - Topix.net
A panel of scientists is disputing a World Health Organization report published earlier this year that concluded glyphosate, the world's most widely used weed killer and main ingredient in Monsanto Co's Roundup herbicide, is probably carcinogenic to humans. The 16-member panel, assembled by Intertek Scientific & Regulatory Consultancy, will present its findings to the annual meeting of the Society for Risk Analysis on Monday, aiming to publish the study at a later date after peer review.

Japanese scientists rescue lost Venus space probe with daring maneuvers
2015-12-08 19:42:02| Extremetech
Five years ago, Japan's Akatsuki probe missed its Venus rendezvous and spun away from the planet into its own orbit around the sun. This week, the probe got another chance to enter orbit and the early results look quite positive.
