Dividends to pour back into sharemarket in hunt for yield

Almost $9 billion in dividends will be paid to investors this week, and much of it will end up back in the sharemarket despite its volatility, fund managers say. Following their interim reports in February, companies are due to pay out more than $19 billion to shareholders throughout March and April, with almost half of that arriving this week, according to CommSec. More than a third of this amount is from the Commonwealth Bank of Australia alone, which this week pays out $3.4 billion in dividends.

BHP Billiton was up 22 cents to $19.16 at 1201 AEDT, while Woodside Petroleum was the best performer in the energy sector, up 62 cents at $30.23. The big four banks were mixed, with ANZ and Commonwealth Bank in the red, but National Australia Bank and Westpac higher.

The Australian share market is slightly higher as the big banks gained ground after the release of a better than expected jobs report. The local market bounced after the release of a 5.9 per cent unemployment rate for October, and the creation of more than 58,000 new jobs.
