Mongabay: Brazil's National Space Research Agency INPE today confirmed an apparent rise in Amazon forest clearing for the four-month period ending February 28, 2013. According to INPE's near real-time deforestation tracking system known at DETER, Amazon deforestation is pacing about 15 percent ahead of last year's rate, when overall forest clearing reached its lowest level since annual record-keeping began in the late 1980s. Govt to cultivate sugar cane on 2,000 hectares

Sugar Industry Development Minister Lakshman Seneviratne yesterday said the government has taken measures to cultivate sugar cane in 2,000 hectares by the end of this year and increase it to 4,000 by 2014 to reduce the expenditure on sugar imports, which is nearly Rs 65,000 million a year.
