AASHTO Report examines ways state DOTs are using drones.

According to AASHTO's March 2016 survey, 33 state departments of transportation (DOTs) either have or are exploring, researching, testing, or using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) – also known as drones – in various applications. Special report by AASHTO's Transportation TV explores ways in which state DOTs are using drones, and online fact sheet highlights benefits of UAV use. AASHTO is also planning webinars on UAS technology and will hold peer exchange during upcoming AASHTO Spring Meeting.

AASHTO Washington Briefing will focus on FAST Act, innovation.

With primary focus on Fixing America's Surface Transportation (FAST) Act, 2016 American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials Washington Briefing will host 300+ transportation executives from across USA. This 4-day meeting will feature as keynote speakers Senators Jim Inhofe (R-OK) and Barbara Boxer (D-CA) as well as Representatives Peter DeFazio (D-OR) and Sam Graves (R-MO). On Thursday, Tesla VP Diarmuid O'Connell will discuss developments in EV technology.

AASHTO Approves Schedule for installing roadway safety devices.

AASHTO approved schedule for implementing use of roadside safety hardware devices – guardrails, crash cushions, etc – on National Highway System that meet new crash-testing standards. Members voted in support of said schedule, which will require new and replacement installations of roadside safety hardware on National Highway System to meet crash-testing standards laid out in AASHTO Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware (MASH).

AASHTO renews alliance to improve safety in work zones.

AASHTO is renewing alliance with OSHA, NIOSH, and the Roadway Work Zone Safety and Health Partners to make construction work zones safer. During 5-year agreement, Alliance will continue to work with member state DOT officials, paramedics, police officers, truck drivers, and other work zone visitors to share information about traffic management techniques; how to prevent construction equipment related incidents; and use of proper personal protective equipment and high-visibility apparel.

AASHTO Leadership Thanks Congress for passing FAST Act.

Paul Trombino, AASHTO president, praised passage of Fixing America's Surface Transportation (FAST) Act. Likewise, AASHTO Executive Director Bud Wright thanked Senate and House leadership and transportation bill conferees for prioritizing this legislation. FAST Act, which will provide ~$300 billion over 5 years, continues to distribute >90% of federal highway funding to State DOTs, maintains current Federal-aid Highway program structure, and includes environmental streamlining provisions.
