Key species of algae shows effects of climate change over time
2014-01-15 20:59:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
ScienceDaily: A study of marine life in the temperate coastal waters of the northeast Pacific Ocean shows a reversal of competitive dominance among species of algae, suggesting that increased ocean acidification caused by global climate change is altering biodiversity. The study, published online January 15, 2014, in the journal Ecology Letters, examined competitive dynamics among crustose coralline algae, a group of species living in the waters around Tatoosh Island, Washington. These species of algae grow...
Climate change threatens native eucalyptus species with extinction, Queensland study finds
2014-01-13 08:57:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Australian Broadcasting Corporation: The future is looking grim for some species of Australian eucalyptus trees, as they feel the impact of more severe heatwaves, droughts and floods. Researchers from the University of Queensland looked at such effects on more than 100 eucalypt species, finding that some may be wiped out from increasingly extreme weather conditions. The report was modelled on two temperature scenarios. The first scenario was for an increase of one degree by 2055 and an increase of just over two degrees by 2085....

Celebrating Deep Freeze, Insect Experts See a Chance to Kill Off Invasive Species
2014-01-09 02:16:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
New York Times: While some people were cursing a canceled flight or wishing they had donned an extra layer on Tuesday, when temperatures in the region took a deep dive, entomologists, foresters and naturalists were rooting for the mercury to drop even lower. That is because the extreme cold has the potential to beat back some of the invasive insects threatening treasured local tree and plant species. You do think, Oh great, maybe some of those nasty insects are going to get zapped today, said Mark Fisher,...

Population Stability Key To Species' Response To Climate Change
2014-01-06 11:25:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
RedOrbit: Species populations have to become stable in order for those creatures to expand their geographical ranges in response to global warming, according to new research published Sunday in the online edition of the journal Nature Climate Change. In the new study, researchers from the University of Yorks Department of Biology, Butterfly Conservation and the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) Centre for Ecology and Hydrology report that the climate in the UK has warmed over the past 40 years....
