Wichita Eagle: A bullfrog peers out from the shallows in a Kansas wetlands area. Rafe Brown on Monday will head from Lawrence, where he teaches herpetology and other subjects at the University of Kansas. He'll go to islands in the Philippines, where, among other things, he'll catch frogs. With other scientists, he'll tramp through jungles and climb volcanic island mountains looking for frogs, toads and other creatures of nature. Nature World: University of Wisconsin-Madison researchers said that ancient soils store large amounts of trapped carbon. The carbon from this soil, which is now being released due to erosion, agriculture and mining could contribute to climate change, researchers said. "There is a lot of carbon at depths where nobody is measuring," said Erika Marin-Spiotta, a University of Wisconsin-Madison assistant professor of geography and the lead author of the new study. "It was assumed that there was little carbon...

BBC: The UK's exhausted oil and gas fields in the North Sea could be transformed into a lucrative dump for Europe's CO2 emissions, MPs say. The Energy and Climate Change Committee says nearby nations could capture the emissions from their power stations, then transport the CO2 offshore in pipes. North Sea rocks that have been sucked dry of oil and gas could be pumped full of the unwanted CO2. Critics say the idea is fanciful. But Tim Yeo, the committee's chair, told the BBC that "the key to...
