Customs and health officials at airports in Washington, Chicago, Atlanta and Newark, New Jersey, are scheduled to start taking the temperatures of passengers from three West African countries as part of a stepped up Ebola screening program. Federal health officials say the entry screenings that start Thursday add another layer of protection to halt the spread of the Ebola virus that has killed thousands.

A Texas nurse's Ebola diagnosis after a visit to Ohio led to public health alerts, precautions and worries Wednesday as officials tried to determine who had close contact with her and keep the illness from spreading. Officials in Summit County, where the woman visited family over the weekend, said one individual in Ohio who had household contact with 29-year-old Amber Joy Vinson self-quarantined at home Tuesday after Vinson's family was notified that she developed Ebola symptoms.
Obama promises more aggressive Ebola response

President Barack Obama canceled a campaign trip at the last minute to stay in Washington and spearhead a more aggressive national response after Ebola infected two nurses and frightened Americans with the prospect that their health system is not equipped to handle a catastrophic medical event. Obama said Wednesday that monitoring of Ebola must be done in a "much more aggressive way."
