BBC: Attempts to rescue a Shell drill rig grounded off the Alaskan coast have been delayed because of high seas and strong winds. The rig, named Kulluk, ran aground on Monday after drifting in stormy weather as it was being towed. The rig is grounded on the south-east side of Sitkalidak Island. The US Coast Guard said the rig, carrying about 143,000 gallons of diesel and about 12,000 gallons of other oil products, appears stable. National Public Radio: After a massive oil rig ran aground near Kodiak, Alaska, Shell Oil again faces questions about its ambitious and expensive plans to drill for oil offshore in the Arctic. The rig doesn't hold any crude oil but carries more than 150,000 gallons of diesel and lube and hydraulic fluids. National Public Radio: An oil drilling rig holding more than 150,000 gallons of diesel, lubricating oil, and hydraulic fluid has run aground near Kodiak Island in the Gulf of Alaska, after it was being towed during a storm. The crew was evacuated before the rig was incapacitated. "The rig ran aground in a storm, with waves up to 35 feet and wind to 70 miles per hour," reports Jeff Brady, on NPR's Newscast.
