The Astrophysics Group of SRON and the Department of Astrophysics of the Radboud University have a vacancy for a 2 PhD students fm SRONs mission is to bring about breakthroughs in international space research. The institute develops pioneering technology and advanced space instruments, and uses them to pursue fundamental astrophysical research, Earth science and exoplanetary research. SRON invites applications for two 4year PhD positions funded by ERC Consolidator Grant number 647208 to Dr. Peter Jonker. The PhD students will work in the group of Dr. Peter Jonker. The endgoal of the work is to determine whether intermediatemass black holes exist and if so what their mass distribution is. The employed tools include Gaia and followup optical and nearinfrared imaging and spectroscopy of tidal disruption events vacancy nr 1220 and compact stellar clusters vacancy nr 1221. Applicants can indicate that they want to be considered for both openings, if they wish so. The PhD students will both be based in Utrecht and, part of the time, in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. Employment conditions Employment of this fulltime position is by NWO The Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research and will be for a period of up to 4 years. The salary will be in accordance with the salary scales of NOW, 2.211, in the first year till 2.823, in the fourth year of employment.
