Fifty-three major California employers - including a Who's Who of Bay Area biggies - scored the top possible grade on the Human Rights Campaign's " corporate equality index ," which annually assesses how big employers treat lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender employees. Many of the Bay Area's leading banking and finance, tech, legal, health care and Fortune 500 firms scored 100 percent on the scale, meant to identify "the best places to work on LGBT equality," according to the Washington, D.C.-based advocacy group, including Apple Inc., Charles Schwab Corp., E&J Gallo Winery , eBay Inc., Genentech , Google , Kaiser Permanente , Levi Strauss & Co ., McKesson Corp., PG&E , Salesforce.com and Safeway .
