Airtel launches 4G service across India

2015-08-06 15:43:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Indian operator Airtel has announced the launch of 4G services in 296 towns across the country. India's largest mobile operator is the first to launch FDD LTE, across its network footprint. Customers can enjoy 4G speeds at no extra cost, after swapping their Sim free for a 4G chip. Airtel also unveiled new postpaid plans with unlimited calls to Airtel and local numbers and a choice of 3, 5, 7 and 15 GB data per month. These range in price from INR 999 to INR 2,999 per month, with higher plans also coming with free subscriptions to the Wynk music and videos service and unlimited calls nationwide. Add-on data bundles are also available starting at 1 GB for INR 250. Airtel said it's partnered with Flipkart and Samsung to introduce a range of 4G smartphones, such as the Galaxy S6 edge. It's also offering the third-generation Moto G and the Mi 4i from Xiaomi, among other 4G phones. Its own white-label Wi-Fi hotspot and USB dongle are also available for LTE on a computer, or a Huawei LTE router for 4G at home. These come with data bundles starting at INR 450 for 2 GB or INR 595 for 3 GB. Airtel has already been offering TD-LTE services in the 2,600 MHz band. It started testing 4G with smartphone and home broadband customers more widely from February 2014, after it acquired spectrum in the 1,800 MHz. The latest announcement makes the LTE services available commercially to all its customers.
