Amazon to release smartphone with 3D display - report

2014-04-14 09:13:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Amazon plans to release a smartphone this autumn, people briefed on the plans told the Wall Street Journal. Several versions of the device were recently demonstrated to developers in San Francisco and Seattle. The new phone will reportedly be capable of displaying hologram-like 3D images without special glasses thanks to four retina-tracking cameras. The technology, which can manipulate text and images as the phone is moved by the viewer, is described as ideal for gaming. The handset's design, operating system and pricing are still unclear. The people said the phone was due to be announced in June for release at the end of September, but cautioned that Amazon's plans could change. The company reportedly told a supplier that it anticipates mass production of the device later in April, with an initial order of 600,000 units. It is said to have agreements with Japan Display and an unnamed screen maker. Amazon and Japan Display would not comment on the matter.
