American Airlines and Qantas are poised to make a major announcement which could include services to the United States from New Zealand, raising prospects of a fare war across the Pacific. American Airlines has been scouting the New Zealand market this year with alliance partner Qantas and direct services from New Zealand to the United States would bring competition to the market which has been missing since the Australian airline withdrew from its loss-making Auckland Los Angeles service in 2012.
