BQ launches Ubuntu smartphone in Europe

2015-02-09 10:13:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Spanish company BQ will start marketing the first smartphone with the Ubuntu OS. This is a new version of BQ's Aquarius E4.5 smartphone, which launched earlier running Android. The Ubuntu version will be available for EUR 169.90 in a series of 'flash' online sales in Europe. Canonical, the developer of the Ubuntu OS, will announce the timing of the sales on the Ubuntu Twitter and social network accounts. Operators such as 3 Sweden, Amena in Spain, Giffgaff in the UK and Portugal Telecom are offering SIM bundles at purchase for buyers. The dual-Sim, unlocked phone comes with a 4.5-inch screen with 960x540 pixel resolution, a quad-core 1.3 GHz MediaTek processor, 1GB RAM, 5 megapixel front camera, 8 megapixel rear camera and 8 GB of internal storage (expandable with microSD card). The Ubuntu OS features Scopes, a new way to display information on the phone which promises to move beyond apps and basic icons. "Scopes guide you to content you want in the same way you think about it to deliver a smooth, engaging experience," said Cristian Parrino, VP Mobile at Canonical. "For developers, Scopes are a much simpler and more valuable way to build mobile experiences than apps."
