Bunge looks to fatten up its food business

Known mainly as a storer and trader of agricultural commodities, Bunge Ltd. is looking to expand its food production unit as a way to boost profits and create an income stream sheltered from the peaks and valleys of commodity prices. White Plains, New York-based Bunge - whose North American division is headquartered in St. Louis - produces everything from donut shortening to liquid butter alternatives in its food business, which saw earnings of $301 million in 2014, or about 25 percent of total earnings and up from $280 million the year before.
