Despite a late Labor Day holiday and stock market volatility, August auto sales rose.

NEW YORK -- August auto sales showed buyers were in the mood to shop, even with a late Labor Day and recent volatility in the stock markets. Industry watchers were expecting a drop in U.S. sales for the month because of the later-than-usual Labor Day this year.
