(Telecompaper) UK mobile operator EE added 5.7 million customers to its LTE network in 2014, including 1.7 million in November-December. This takes its 4G customer base to 7.7 million, beating its 2014 target of 6 million. EE said it added more 4G customers than any other operator in Europe. The company being purchased by BT, brought 4G to 350 new cities and towns last year, 200 in the fourth quarter alone, and is now in 510 towns and cities with 10,000 or more inhabitants. This gives the operator over 80 percent population coverage, on track to reach its 98 percent target by the end of the year. Recently added towns include Hastings, Worcester, Crewe, Rugby and Stratford-Upon-Avon. EE also added more than 1,000 small towns and villages towards the end of 2014, taking the total to nearly 4,000 such locations covered. LTE traffic rose sixfold in 2014, driven by users uploading selfies to share on social networks and downloading streaming video from YouTube, BBC iPlayer, Sky Go and others. EE introduced LTE-A in London and the country's busiest areas including Tech City, home to the three busiest LTE sites in 2014, Silicon Roundabout, Shoreditch High Street and Hoxton.
