EE doubles speed, capacity of UK 4G network

2013-04-09 11:30:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) EE is doubling the speed and capacity of its UK 4G network. The launch of double-speed 4G, which enables lab speeds of 130 Mbps, will increase headline speeds to over 80 Mbps, and double average speeds for 4GEE customers to more than 20 Mbps. EE is doubling the amount of 1800 MHz spectrum bandwidth dedicated to 4G, from 10 MHz to 20 MHz. The increased 4G speeds will be rolled out to 10 existing 4G cities by the summer - Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester and Sheffield. Trials of the new technology in Cardiff have already seen headline speeds reach over 80Mbps. The improvements will automatically be available in those cities within existing plans to new and current 4GEE customers on all 4G smartphones, tablets and dongles. EE aims to reach one million 4G customers by end-2013, which would represent around 8 percent of its pay-monthly user base.
