Location ESRIN, Frascati, Italy Description EO Security Applications Scientist Duties The postholder will be responsible for building increased use of civilian EO capabilities in all security domains consistent with the ESA Convention. This will initially include law enforcement environmental crime, crimes against humanity, proliferation, organised crime, terrorism, intelligence analysis and threat assessment, civilmilitary cooperation and actions addressing fragility, conflict and violence. Responsibilities include engaging key stakeholders from the law enforcementsecurity community, identifying opportunities for strategic collaboration at international and national level building awareness and acceptance of civilian EO capabilities among securitysector stakeholders to foster longerterm adoption consolidating stakeholder requirements, gathering information requirements identifying and addressing structural impediments to the takeup of civilian EObased productsservices in the security domain defining and implementing innovative projects to foster the use of civilian EO in law enforcement, fragilityconflictviolence situations and intelligencethreat assessment assessing EO science and application developments data analytics, data fusion, machine learningartificial intelligence with regard to the exploitation potential in the securitylaw enforcement domain providing userdriving inputs for exploitation of existing EO missions for security applications and definition of future mission requirements cooperating with other EOP teams involved in industrial innovation, particularly the Lab Invest Office, to address evolving security domain priorities contributing to ESA communication efforts promoting EO results, mission achievements and benefits for society supervising and supporting the work of Young Graduate Trainees, National Trainees and Research Fellows. Technical competencies Experience in the application of satelliteairborne EO with stakeholders from the security domain in Europe Knowledge of European and Global law enforcementsecurity environments Experience in the application within the EO domain of big data analytics, data fusion and machine learning for classification and feature detection Behavioural competencies Problem Solving Teamwork Innovation Creativity Education A PhD or equivalent in a relevant discipline such as engineering, Earth sciences, computer science, applied physics, the security domain or data science. Additional requirements Specialist experience of working in the one of the following areas would be an advantage law enforcement, fragile states, intelligencethreat assessment, civilmilitary cooperation. Strong problemsolving skills to deal with daytoday operational challenges, demonstrated planning and organisational skills. Strong results orientation with the ability to set priorities and present practical solutions orally and in writing. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset. The Agency may require applicants to undergo selection tests.
