Staff are supported by local Country based offices We offer our staff a number of additional benefits and assistance For our activities in EUMETSAT, we are currently seeking to employ a person to provide scientific consultancy in the area of Radio Occultation. Overview To ensure continuity of the core missions supported by the current EPSMetop system and to fulfill complementary user needs a followup programme, EPSSG, is currently being prepared by EUMETSAT. The EPSSG space segment will be based on a twosatellite configuration with a launch readiness by the end of 2020 for the first satellite and by 2022 for the second satellite. Recurrent satellites will be provided and launched in order to achieve a minimum of 21 years. To ensure continuity of the core missions supported by the current EPSMetop system and to fulfill complementary user needs a followup programme, EPSSG, is currently being prepared by of operations. EUMETSAT will rely on cooperation with ESA for the development of the satellites and of a subset of the instruments. EUMETSAT will cooperate with other Partners for the acquisition of the other instruments including the METimage DLR, IASING CNES and ARGOS CNES. EUMETSAT will develop and procure its EPSSG ground segment, capitalising on existing multi mission elements that are already in operation in the headquarters as well as in the Satellite Application Facilities SAF Network. The EPSSG will have a strong heritage from the existing EPS with its Metop satellites and their operations. Progress is underway with NOAA to define the Joint Polar System JPS and formulation of the JPS agreement. Under this cooperation, EUMETSAT and NOAA will have the endtoend responsibilities for the midmorning and afternoon orbits, respectively. The EPSSG is defined as the European component of the future JPS. The EPSSG programme has started its phase B, during which the user and system requirements are being consolidated in iteration with the users, and different system concepts to implement these requirements are elaborated and tradedoff. The focus of the consultant will be on the scientific aspects associated to the development of the product processing facilities of the EPSSG ground segment. Deliverables The activities of the successful applicant will include scientific aspects related to the development of the product processing facilities of the EPSSG ground segment. You will work in a matrix structure providing crossdivisional support and be hosted in the Remote Sensing and Products Division of the Technical and Science Support Department. Your tasks and responsibilities will include Preparation of algorithm theoretical basis documents for the generation of level 1 and selected level 2 products Preparation of product generation specifications for the product processing facilities Prototyping of product generation functions Generation of product contents specifications Preparation of test data Preparation of initial validation plans Contribution to the generation of performance budgets Conduct of internal studies related to mission requirements refinements Assessment of results from external studies Contribution to the initiation of scientific support studies System meetings and activities of instrument functional chain teams IFCT1 Participation in reviews The support will involve close crossdivisional interactions and interface with experts in various disciplines system engineering, instruments, operations, science. Qualifications and Requirements Applicants require, as mandatory, the following experience and background University degree in remote sensing, meteorology, oceanography, physics, or equivalent At least three years of experience in the field of remote sensing, including experience with radio occultation observations Experience in satellite data processing Very good skills in a higher programming language, such as Fortran, CC, Python Skills in writing scientifictechnical documents Familiarity with Microsoft Office Good interpersonal skills in support of team work Fluency in English, as is the working language at EUMETSAT The following experience would be an additional asset Experience in understanding and writing requirements Experience with the specification, development, and validation of satellite data processing chains Experience with calibration and product validation methods Knowledge in radio occultation data processing and applications Application procedure Important All applicants must hold a current valid work permit for Germany or be EU nationals.
