Two of the largest freight railroads in the world, CSX Corp. and Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd., are discussing a merger that would connect fields of Great Plains crude oil to eastern refineries like never before. There's some reason for average citizens to like this deal: For one thing, it would potentially reduce consumer prices by helping untangle the disastrous backup of trains around Chicago that delays shipments by creating in effect a true transcontinental octopus.
