House report blasts NHTSA for failing to spot GM ignition defect

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration made a series of critical mistakes and had 'ample information' that should have allowed the agency to discover General Motors' ignition switch defect linked to at least 19 deaths and 54 crashes, a congressional report released late Monday found. The auto safety agency came under withering criticism from GOP staff of the House Energy and Commerce Committee in a 44-page report based on a review of millions of pages of records and interviews with key NHTSA officials.
