(Telecompaper) Huawei reported its first-half smartphone shipments up 62 percent year-on-year to 34.27 million units. The company's consumer division shipped in total 64.21 million devices in the six months. The growth was driven by new flagship models such as the Mate 2 4G and Ascend P7, Huawei said. The P7, which features LTE and an 8-megapixel front camera, sold nearly 2 million units less than two months after its launch. Sales were helped by the company's increased marketing, including sponsorship of a number of well-known football clubs in Europe. The company achieved a market share of 3 percent in Germany and Spain and aims to grow this to 5 percent soon. In Q2 alone, Huawei shipped 20.56 million smartphones to markets in Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa, an increase of 85 percent compared to last year. Shipments grew 550 percent in the Middle East and Africa, 275 percent in Latin America, 180 percent in Asia-Pacific and 120 percent in Europe.
