This post is classified in the A2A4 grade band of the Coordinated Organisations salary scale. LOCATION Space Telescope Science Institute, Baltimore USA. DUTIES As part of its collaboration with NASA on the Hubble Space Telescope HST, ESA is providing scientists to be deployed in different functions at the Space Telescope Science Institute STScl in support of HST science operations. As Instrument Scientist, the holder of this post will ensure that the science instruments obtain highquality astronomical data, that calibrations are optimized to allow scientific interpretation of the data, and that the HST observers have the information they need to make the best scientific use of the HST instruments. Specific tasks of Instrument Scientists include performing user support and serving as contact scientist, providing technical coordination to users on all aspects of their program, ranging from proposal implementation through data analysis generating calibration plans and proposals, performing advanced analysis of calibration data, reviewing calibration products, and making them available to operational systems investigating techniques for improving the scientific output of the science instruments, including algorithms and requirements for data analysis systems and calibration pipelines analysing the instrument status and investigating instrument anomalies generating technical reports and user documentation, and providing reports and presentations on all areas related to the science instruments performing user support by providing technical coordination to users on all aspects of the data archives supporting, as required, the ESA HST Mission Manager and the Project Scientist in a variety of tasks related to the interface with the European astronomical community. QUALIFICATIONS Applicants for this post should have a Ph.D. or equivalent qualification in Astronomy, Physics or a related discipline. Knowledge of modern astronomical data analysis software and handson experience with the reduction and calibration of astronomical data are essential for this post. Expertise with astronomical data from space missions in general, and from HST in particular, andor previous operational experience on other astronomical space missions are considered key additional assets. Candidates must have an active research program of their own, preferably involving HST data, andor aligned with the scientific capabilities of JWST in the future. They must demonstrate plans for continuing their active research while in this post. Established collaborations with European and international scientists, and the willingness to pursue these in the future, are considered assets. Applicants should have excellent analytical, communications and synthesis skills, and a proactive attitude to solving problems. They should have good interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively in an international team environment. The working languages of the Agency are English and French. Due to the duty station, a good knowledge of English is required, together with a working knowledge of French. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset.
