Post Internal Research Fellow PostDoc for Ocean Colour and Carbon Cycle Science This post is classified F2. Location ESRIN, Frascati, Italy Our team and mission The holder of this post will report to the Head of the Science Section in the Applications Division within the Science, Applications and Climate Department of the Directorate of Earth Observation Programmes. In the execution of the tasks, the holder of this post will work in close cooperation with other staff of the Directorate of Earth Observation Programmes. The Applications Division is a dynamic RD team leading research and development activities, in partnership with European and international industry and academia, aiming at advancing science, developing novel applications, supporting industry growth and contributing to establish an European ecosystem of exploitation platforms to maximize the impact of European missions in society. Interested candidates are encouraged to visit the ESA website www.esa.int Fields of activitiesresearch ESA, together with the scientific community, is actively engaged in a number of scientific developments in the domain of ocean colour, ocean biology and ocean carbon cycle research aiming at Developing innovative methods, algorithms an products to improve our capacity to observe and monitor ocean carbon cycle Enhance our knowledge of the global ocean biology and marine ecosystems Advancing our capacity to better characterise CO2 fluxes and airsea interactions Exploring innovative methods to estimate the different components of the ocean carbonate system and monitor acidification from space Improving our knowledge of the ocean carbon cycle and its biochemical, physical and ocean circulation components. The advent of the sentinel missions, its synergies with the Earth Explorers e.g., SMOS and other data including insitu as well as the exploitation of the longterm EO data archives open new frontiers for science and research in the domain of ocean colour, marine ecosystems and carbon cycle research. In this context, the candidate will be involved in three main activities Support the scientific development, definition and technical supervision of science projects, carried out by external teams of experts and scientists, addressing mainly EO for ocean colour, ocean biology and ecosystem research, CO2 fluxes and seaair interactions, acidification and ocean carbon cycle science. Support the ESA interface and dialogue with the relevant scientific communities, including international science groups such as SOLAS, IMBER, IOCCG, etc Carry out a dedicated research focusing on the scientific exploitation of European and other EO missions with special focus on fostering new methods, algorithm, products and innovative science results with special focus on the ocean carbon cycle and its physical and biochemistry components. Applicants should have good analytical and communication skills and should be able to work in a multicultural environment in an autonomous manner. The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset. Preference will be given to applications submitted by candidates within five years of receiving their PhD.
