JILA Physicists Achieve Elusive 'Evaporative Cooling' of Molecules

2013-01-09 06:00:00| Industrial Newsroom - All News for Today

Physicists from JILA, joint institute of NIST and University of Colorado (CU) Boulder, have chilled gas of molecules to very low temperatures by adapting familiar process by which hot cup of coffee cools. Specifically, researchers developed magnetic trap and technique to achieve evaporative cooling of hydroxyl molecules. This demonstration, reported in December 20, 2012 issue of Nature, marks first time evaporative cooling has been achieved with molecules. This story is related to the following:Trade Associations
