(Telecompaper) Lenovo moved into the top position in the global PC market in the second quarter, as the Chinese manufacturer outperformed a contracting market. Overall PC shipments were down 10.9 percent year-on-year to 76 million units, according to Gartner, while IDC put the fall at 11.4 percent to 75.4 million units. Lenovo's shipments fell only around 1 percent, helping its market share improve to 16.7 percent, according to both market researchers' estimates. HP also won market share, growing to an estimated 16.3-16.4 percent, and Dell improved to 11.8-12.2 percent, depending on the estimates. Acer was the big loser, as its shipments fell over 30 percent from a year earlier, taking its market share to 8.2-8.3 percent. Asus was in fifth place, also dropping slightly to 6.0-6.1 percent of the market. The strong performance by the top three vendors was attributed to a better-than-expected US market in Q2 as well as growth in the professional segment. The EMEA region remained weak, as consumers preferred tablets over notebooks, and demand in Asia was also down on a year earlier.
