This is a permanent position, calling for at least five years experience of system administration in a Linux environment. You will be placed on assignment based near Frankfurt in Germany for several years. Candidates should be available to start in May 2015 or even before. Our client is responsible for establishing and operating weather forecasting and Earth observation satellite programmes with associated data telemetry and dissemination operations. Vast quantities of data are produced and user communities throughout the world are able to access both current and historical data sets. The demanding realtime environment places much emphasis on adherence to quality and configuration management standards and procedures. The main working language is English. The role will embrace Installation and configuration of operating system and other software, and tuning operating systems parameters Analysis, planning and performance of hardware and software upgrades, taking care of compatibility issues between subsystems Monitoring system performance, investigation of problems and performance of corrective actions Ensuring that, after failures, the operational configuration can be restored, including the definition, maintenance, performance of backup procedures Liaison with external providers of hardware and system software maintenance Administration of user accounts Support to software development and maintenance Implementation and maintenance of scripts for the above activities Generation of technical documentation in relation to system upgrades Provision of standby and oncall support The key experience and attributes sought are At least 5 years experience in the administration and troubleshooting of distributed systems Expert knowledge of Linux operating systems RedHat and SLES Good experience in VMWare virtualization System design skills Good understanding of incident and problem management Technical documentation skills High availability software like Sun Cluster or Veritas Cluster Knowledge of some of the following would be advantageous TCPIIP internetworking and related network protocols and applications, e.g. NIS, NFS, DNS, SNMP, FTP Dell I HP computers running Linux Solaris and MS Windows System Administration RAID arrays EMC SAN Fabrics Brocade Candidates should possess a University degree or equivalent.
