Microsoft unveils Windows 10 editions ahead of summer launch

2015-05-14 08:35:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Microsoft has unveiled further details of the various versions of Windows 10 and confirmed the new operating system is on track to launch this summer in 190 countries. While Windows 10 is expected to unify the OS across devices - from phones to PCs to the IoT - Microsoft will still offer different editions for various user groups and platforms. Windows 10 Home is the consumer-focused desktop edition. This will come with the digital assistant Cortana, the new Microsoft Edge web browser; Continuum tablet mode for touch devices, and Windows Hello face-recognition, iris and fingerprint login. It also supports access to Xbox games. Windows 10 Mobile is designed for smaller, mobile, touch-centric devices like smartphones and small tablets. It comes with the same apps that are included in Windows 10 Home, as well as the new touch-optimized version of Office. In addition, Windows 10 Mobile will enable some new devices to take advantage of Continuum for phone, so people can use their phone like a PC when connected to a larger screen. Windows 10 Pro is the desktop edition for small businesses and 'prosumers'. Adding to the consumer apps, it includes software to help manage devices and apps, protect business data, support remote and mobile productivity scenarios and take advantage of cloud technologies. As announced earlier this year, Microsoft is offering the full versions of Windows 10 Home, Windows 10 Mobile and Windows 10 Pro as a free upgrade for Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1 devices that upgrade in the first year after launch. The other new versions of Windows are Windows 10 Enterprise for medium and large businesses, which offers increased security and deployment options; Windows 10 Education, adapting the Enterprise edition for use in schools; and Windows 10 Mobile Enterprise for business smartphones and small tablets through Volume Licensing.
