(Telecompaper) Global mobile data traffic will grow twice as fast as fixed IP traffic in the coming five years, reaching 30.6 exabytes per month in 2020 versus 3.7 exabytes in 2015, according to the latest forecasts from Cisco. The company predicts annual global mobile data traffic will reach 366.8 exabytes in 2020, more than eight times the 44.2 exabytes recorded in 2015 and 120 times more than just 10 years previous in 2010. In addition to more mobile users, 'smart' devices and M2M connections, video is driving the growth in mobile data traffic. Cisco expects over 75 percent of the world's mobile data traffic will be video by 2020. The demand for higher video resolution, more bandwidth and processing speed also will increase the use of 4G devices with faster speeds, Cisco said. 4G data use is expected to surpass 2G by 2018 and 3G by 2020, and 4G will represent more than 70 percent of all mobile traffic by the end of forecast period, compared to 47 percent last year.
