Oi launches 4G service in Rio de Janeiro

2013-04-26 11:53:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Brazilian operator Oi has started selling 4G services in Rio de Janeiro. In addition, LTE packages will go on sale in Belo Horizonte, Brasília, Salvador, Recife and Fortaleza from the second half of May, with the network expected to be live by 30 April. The director general of operations of Oi, James Meaney, said the launch in Sao Paulo will depend on TIM Brasil, its partner for the installation of the 4G network in some parts of the country. Initially, Oi planned to invest BRL 1 billion from 2012 to 2015 for the introduction of 4G and boosting 3G coverage. However, the agreement with TIM, according to Meaney, has helped reduce this figure to BRL 800 million. The 4G internet plan for smartphones in Rio de Janeiro will cost BRL 98/month, while the service for modems (notebooks and tablets) will vary between BRL 125 and BRL 188. LTE devices will include the Samsung Galazy S3 LTE, Motorola Razr HD, Nokia Lumia 820 and the mini-modem E3276 4G from Huawei.
