The Position Welcome to Space For our team located at EUMETSAT, we are looking for a Scientist with experience in the wide field of Optical Imagery! Assigned to a service at our customer EUMETSAT, you will support a wide range of activities in the area of optical imaging of EUMETSAT and third party missions together respective EUMETSAT Competence Area, including instruments from both Low Earth Orbit LEO and Geostationary Orbit GEO satellites. In the context of this position optical imagers relate to passive space borne radiometers measuring the radiation in visible and infrared wave lengths of the electromagnetic spectrum. In addition to optical imagers, infrared sounders are utilised, for example, in the derivation of Atmospheric Motion Vectors. A possible future scope and potential AMV activities shall also cover a Doppler Wind Lidar DWL. You will be directly involved in the scientific development and maintenance, and the scientific support to operations, of following products Atmospheric Motion Vectors AMV, both GEO and LEO SEVIRI FCI Level2 products, e.g., Global Instability Index, Active Fire Monitoring METimage FCI Level1 products, including test data generation, prototyping, Calval Lightning Imager LI Level1 and Level2 products and potentially the Doppler Wind Lidar DWL Level1 and Level2 products It is fulltime and permanent and expected starting date will be around January 2022. Your Responsibilities Your tasks will include the scientific and technical support to L1 and L2 product processing, L1 and L2 Calibration and Validation support quality monitoring, and of course the scientific and technical support to future missions development. You will work in strong cooperation with our team and EUMETSAT engineers across the entire organization and in various disciplines system engineering, instruments, ground segment, operations, science. QualificationsExperience What are we looking for? Maybe for you, with some years of background in satellite instruments with a proven focus on Optical Imagery or Remote Sensing, ideally also including the involvement in processing of satellite data up to level 1 calibratedgeolocated radiances andor level 2 geophysical parameters, satellite data monitoring. Of course, you are easily understanding the relating physics processes in such satellite instruments together with a university degree in the domain of physical remote sensing, meteorology, physics, ITComputational Science, or equivalent. Essential Skills We need you with professional skills in scientific software development in Fortran and CC. Experience with the development of modular, clearly readable and adaptable scientific software is required, including configuration control of the developed code. Teamwork and ones own initiative is what you enjoy Capable of working both individually and independently on assigned responsibilities, while you are part of the system team. NonEssential Skills It would be ideal, if you are already holding indepth knowledge and experience in one or more of the following fields Experience with source code management processes in particular branch based development workflows, and peer code reviews and tools git, subversion Very good skills in Python, especially with scientific Python modules NumPy, SciPy, Dask, xarray, pandas, and Python visualisation modules Proficiency in commandline use on LinuxUnix platforms Verification of operational product processing systems Production monitoring and reporting Quality control of satellite data and productsOperating systems and application software upgrades porting to new platforms In order to convince our customers, the following experience would be an asset Experience with the specification, development and validation of satellite data pro cessing chains Utilisation of products from meteorological satellites Experience with calibration and product validation methods Experience with common UNIXLinux development tools e.g., make, automakeauto conf, debugging tools for multithreaded applications, profiling tools Experience in software unit, acceptance, system and integration testing Knowledge in radiative transfer Experience in the use of image processing software such as IDL or ENVI in a UNIXLinux environment Experience with other scripting languages, such as Perl, Matlab, etc... Familiarity in manipulating analysis and forecast data from NWP models Experience in understanding and specifying requirements Experience in writing software documentation.
