Parliament wants more time for code of conduct around debt

2015-10-07 11:29:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) The Dutch Lower House of Parliament wants the telecom sector to get more time to discuss debt problems and how it plans to apply the Financial Supervision Act (Wft). The House wants parties to have until the end of the year to agree on a covenant. Parliament is responding to a motion put forth on 6 October by VVD MP Aukje de Vries. The motion asked the government to invite the sector to develop a code of conduct for the prevention and management of mobile debts. If the government finds the agreements adequate, then the sector will be exempted from supervision under the Wtf. A code of conduct has to be set up by 1 January, or at least, be in sight by then. The motion has received the support of coalition and some opposition parties, but not from Christian Democrat Party CDA. MP Pieter Omtzigt wants to establish a link between Wft/debt problems and a number of other files but has not managed to garner any support for the idea. Minister of Financial Affairs Jeroen Dijsselbloem said earlier that he can go with the two extra months for the sector to come up with a code of conduct.
